More Sex In The Cinema

Not so long ago the idea of actual sex being shown in a regular cinema in a regular movie was unheard of and, according to most censors around the world, not allowed. Times have changed though and, as with the increase of graphic violence, so has sex.

Although it is still the smaller budget movies that contain the sex, the actors are generally unknown and the movie will have a fairly limited release.

Romance (DVD) started a new trend for sexually intimate movies which showed the actual sex, oral sex and some simple bondage as one woman moves from one lover to another. Although a French movie it made a name for itself from the display of sex. As the 21st Century moved along the movies took some interesting turns, another French Movie, Baise Moi (DVD) took on the a new turn with a graphic rape scene followed by a serious of sexual turns.

Known names are beginning to make a move in the occasional movie though. Kerry Fox may not be a vastly well known name but she managed to get extremely intimate in Intimacy (DVD) and Chloë Sevigny gave a rather stirring blowjob in the otherwise abominable movie Brown Bunny (DVD) a movie which many consider the worst ever made.

The more recent 9 Songs (DVD), a mix of graphical sex and live music, and the real star of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, Shortbus have taken the story away from the sex a little, letting the sex take centre stage.

Of course, the art of being a major movie star and making a movie containing real sex does happen but such movies end up on the internet and not in the cinemas (fortunately, since very few are worth paying for).

Then, there are the porn movies. These are getting bigger. Digital Play's porn movie Pirates (DVD) cost a small fortune to make and has been lauded as an epic porn movie. Porn may have a reputation for dodgy acting and plots so flimsy they would blow away in a slight breeze but it is improving, if only a little. The success of Pirates suggests that others may start to spend a little more on their porn movies.

How long then before porn and regular movies begin to merge closer into one new genre with a cinematic release?
