More Sex in the Cinema

Times have changed. For any regular movie goer over the years the changes in what is acceptable within a movie has altered vastly and looks like continuing with the latest movie to feature full blown scenes of a very sexual nature.

The censorship within movies has altered from no nudity to semi-nudity, naked breasts, full frontal female nudity, the flaccid penis became the erect penis. Once all on screen sex scenes were simulated, now they are done correctly and showing the penetration is creeping into movies.

From Baise-Moi, through Intimacy and 9 Songs, scenes involving oral sex, couples fucking and ejaculation. It's all been considered art by some and porn by others but it's no real surprise that the world of "mainstream" cinema and the porn world are beginning to merge. Regular porn movie budgets and productions are growing and old fashioned values are changing.

Is there any real difference between the mainstream and the porn anymore? The sex in some feels more realistic and it's not always perfect, porn stars still have a habit of staring at the camera and being good fuckers but poor actors.

The latest in the growing list of movies featuring sex scenes is due out next month. Shortbus is set in New York in and around a salon where men and women, regardless of their sexual preference, meet to talk about and participate in the world of sex, loves, romance and relationships.

Early screenings, particularly at the Cannes Film Festival, suggest that this movie, featuring such characters as a sex therapist who's never had an orgasm and a male couple who want to expand from their monogamy, is somewhat enjoyable.

Shortbus has been made by director John Cameron Mitchell who had previously made "Hedwig and The Angry Inch" and looks at the different couplings and singles involved. The sex is varied and sometimes fun, especially if you enjoy watching guys self-suck themselves to orgasm.

Some will deride it, call it porn and demand to know why it's being shown in the cinema. Some will go and watch it and enjoy it. Either way, a movie that would, not so long ago, be considered too pornographic will be there for your viewing pleasure. The good aspect, though, is that censorship is changing and for the better.
